He was pot-bellied, bald, and had a jolly smile on his face all the time, which earned him the name “laughing Buddha.”

It is distinct from the representation of Gautama Buddha from the teachings from which Buddhism was derived. Budai was considered to be the incarnation of the “Bodhisattva Maitreya,” meaning the one who is yet to become enlightened Buddha. The Bodhisattva Maitreya has the task of appearing on Earth to teach the pure dharma. This Buddha is always represented carrying a cloth bag or linen sack with a never-ending supply of health, joy, and wealth.

Chinese temples have statues of laughing Buddha located at temple entrances. The Lingyin temple in Hangchou has a massive 24.6 meter laughing Buddha statue carved out of camphor wood. Covered with 60 taels of gold, it is the largest wooden statue in China. The more commonly found laughing Buddha is often made out of clay, wood, marble, stone, and Jade materials. They are sold as souvenirs outside of temples and also in gift shops in many places around the world.

If we talk about Hinduism, Lord Kuber is considered as the Lord of wealth and fortune. However, In China people usually keep a statue of Laughing Buddha at their homes to increase good fortune and attract the positive energies around them. They consider Laughing Budhha as an idol who protects them and doubles the benefits of positive vibrations in the house.

Buddha with a Fan: It represents happiness and joy. People say that a waving fan of Buddha clears away all the negatives energies from our lives and the home a happy place to live.

Tips to Consider Before Placing a Buddha Statue in Your Home

  • Never set the laughing buddha statue for home on the floor; instead, position it someplace around eye level.
  • Keep the Buddha statue away from electrical devices (including televisions and motor components), as these are supposed to affect the energy field and may bother the Buddha. Any smiling Buddha statues put in front of the main door should face the entry and not the rest of the house.
  • The smiling buddha home statue is not intended for worship.
  • Keep the space around the statue tidy and clutter-free at all times.
  • Avoid putting the statue near power outlets, machines, or above any electronic device since it might disrupt or impede the aura of good energy.
  • Never place the laughing Buddha on top of a shoe rack.

  4. The Buddha may also be placed in the children’s room. It allows them to concentrate on their studies and they will be showing respect for their parents.
